Architecture has existed in one form or another for thousands of years. All one has to do is take a look at some of the incredible structures that the ancients built, all done without the use of fossil fuel-powered machinery. Many of these structures are still standing countless centuries later, and one of the most prominent reasons for their long-term stability is thanks to excellent planning – the kind of planning that most of us would call architecture today.
As it stands then, there are innumerable talented architects from throughout ancient history, but here we will look at some of the most well-known of them all.
Imhotep
Imhotep was an extremely important figure in ancient Egypt, having worked his way up from being a simple commoner to earning the role of chief architect of the pharaoh at the time, Djoser.
Imhotep is often thought to be the first architect in history, and it was his designs that would be used for the very first pyramid of all time. The Step Pyramid of Saqqara was designed to house the pharaoh; to act as his tomb. This pyramid overlooked the ancient Egyptian city of Memphis, which was the capital of the region at the time. Imhotep not only did the planning, but he actually invented the equipment needed to create the pyramid.
Mimar Sinan
Based within the Ottoman Empire, Mimar Sinan was responsible for the design of more than 300 structures during the 16th century. Most of the most notable architecture of the Arabic world today can be attributed to Sinan, who designed many of the palaces and mosques that are still being used today. He was also considered the most important architect in the history of Turkey, and the many dome mosques found throughout the region of his design.
His creative designs have been so important in the architectural world that they can be found throughout virtually every culture and media. Think of the books, paintings, movies, games, even on the underside of a card playing blackjack online can you find the famous dome shape.
Michelangelo
Michelangelo needs very little introduction, being famed for his incredible talent for sculpture and painting. But it’s not quite as widely known that he was also a master architect and is considered to be one of the most influential building designers of all time.
Michelangelo was first commissioned by Pope Clement VII in the early 1500s. He was asked to design a library on top of a convent, which was the beginning of his career. Many of the most well-known structures throughout Florence were almost certainly either created by him or inspired by his work.
Of all of his famous works, none stands out more than the St. Peter’s Basilica dome, which can be found in the middle of Vatican City. It’s instantly recognisable, and has been the inspiration for a number of imitators, such as the Capital building in Washington D.C.
